Package: hal
Version: 0.5.11-2
Severity: wishlist

Hello!

My wish is to make it relatively simple and easy for administrators to
set up HAL to use NTFS-3G so that desktop users could mount their
removable NTFS storage devices read and write.

I would like this to be included in lenny and I expect that if this is
done correctly and soon enough, the release team will authorize this.

As I understand it, the way to do this is via tinkering with
HAL's .fdi files; changing some defaults there; I haven't investigated
just what exactly needs be done.

My suggestion is to make a debconf question in the hal package which
will ask which driver I would like HAL to use for mounting ntfs
filesystems. This debconf question will let me choose between the kernel
driver (the current default), the user-space driver (ntfsmount from ntfsprogs
package) and the NTFS-3G driv
er. Which selections are available will depend on which packages are installed
and the debconf question sho
uld let me know of these options, so that I'll know which packages I can
install for this purpose.

I would really like this to be included in lenny so I'll be posting
about this in various mailing lists asking for help and I'll appreciate
the Debian hal team's quick response.

Peace!
