I use network-manager-kde to connect to a private wireless LAN of mine. The 
wireless LAN uses a reserved network address space and its DHCP server is 
deliberately configured not to pass on a default gateway when assigning 
leases.

However, when using network-manager to connect to that WLAN, I can see a 
default gateway has been added to the routing table, its address being what 
you would expect: 192.168.x.254. This does not happen when connecting to that 
WLAN using ifupdown.

When  assigning a non-standard default gateway address ( e.g. 192.168.x.25 ) 
in the DHCP server's config, that default gateway will correctly be added to 
the routing table, though.

network-manager should not second-guess the DHCP server not handing out an 
address for a default gateway. First of all, no such default gateway might 
exist in that network, or even worse, the default gateway might have a 
different address than x.y.z.254.

In case of broken dhcp servers mistakenly not handing out default gateway 
addresses, network-manager GUIs could provide for an option that lets the 
user decide whether she wants to have a default gateway route added to the 
routing table or not.
