[Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#470031: hald blocks the umount command when using loopback devices over ssh

Package: hal
Version: 0.5.10-5
Severity: important

I'm using a straight Debian Sid ("testing") system. AMD ~2.6G CPU. Western
Digital SATA HDs

Logging in over SSH, I mounted an iso file via loopback. No problems,
there. However, when I went
to un-mount the filesystem, umount returned the "device busy" error
message. Repeated variations of
lsof, fuser, and a manual search (grep) of the open processes via /proc
revealed that there were no
open files on the filesystem and no processes accessing the filesystem.

The solution was to kill hald, then restart it. At that point umount began
working properly again.

Killing hald alone did not do the trick. Killing hald and then attempting
umount simply returned the
"device busy" message. It was only after killing hald and then restarting
the hald process that the filesystem
could finally be un-mounted.

This is the third time this has happened. I often access machines via SSH
and often use loopback files.
Before discovering the relationship with hal I had been resorting to
rebooting the machines to clear the fs tab.

And thanks VERY MUCH for all the good work --

K.
