I have removed and purged network-manager-openvpn*, created a fresh
account and rerun as asked,

file dbus-message.c line 1667.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

get_nm_state(): didn't get a reply from NetworkManager.
NetworkManager appears not to be running (could not get its state).
