In conjunction with the madwifi driver network manager is
unable to connect to a wireless network being it encrypted
or not. This issue is also addressed in ticket #1030 of
madwifi and ubuntu bug #199802. It can sometimes be
circumvented by setting

   iwpriv ath0 mode 3 

The problem persists up to madwifi source for 0.9.4.
