According to popcon:

network-manager: 34495
network-manager-applet: 31638
knetworkmanager: 3341

Number of people having both installed is between min 484 and max 3341.

lxde: 188

I don't think this would be a viable solution that would justify the
efforts.

If LXDE properly implements the fdo specs and sets a proper desktop
identifier, you could add that to
/etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop

OnlyShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;LXDE

I have never seen the LXDE identifier before, though.
