Heyho!
(Only saw your mail after I wrote the other one this morning...)

---> at this point: starting nm-applet now.

A dialog pops up:
The NetworkManager applet could not find some required resources. It
cannot continue.
And in the terminal:
** (nm-applet:5724): WARNING **: Icon nm-no-connection missing: Icon
'nm-no-connection' not present in theme
Hmmm. The icon is present in the hicolor icon theme. How do I tell it
to use them? Is there no CLI for nm?
Ok, while I'm still offline, restarting the KDE4 widget.
No further output on the NetworkManager terminal, but .xsession-error has:

And I'm exactly where I started.
loading/unloading acer_wmi doesn't make a difference. (Haven't tested
booting without that. Will, later.) The WLAN switch works in either
case. (And was always switched to on.)
A quick search with google didn't turn up anything that worked about the
nm-applet icon problem (a CLI would really be helpful for debugging :-)
so this is as much data as I can give right now...
(And thanks for trying to look into this, in any case!)
cheers
