Hello,

I have similar trouble running kernel 2.6.26-etchnhalf.1-amd64 and upgrading to current Sid.

During the upgrade, the installation breaks with:
usermod: user haldaemon is currently logged in
Reloading system message bus config... done.
Starting Hardware abstraction layer: hald (now it hangs for about 3 minutes)
invoke-rc.d: initscript hal, action "start" failed.

Yeah, that's all.

If I run it with "sh -x", I see only hald hanging on with start-stop-daemon. strace ends somewhere in a wait(-4,...) syscall.
