Apparently this is a bug in the window/session manager.
For GNOME, it was fixed in gnome-session 2.26.1-2 (see #527860).
awesome was the only other window manager where I could reproduce this
behaviour. So I'm reassigning this bug report to awesome.

awesome should not exit resp. abort the X session when dbus is restarted.
