Well, this certainly looks like a driver/kernel issue, if your system freezes
completely. That wicd doesn't expose this behaviour doesn't necessarily mean
this is a bug in network-manager, only that this bug is *triggered* by
network-manager.

FWIW, can you reproduce the problem with network-manager 0.7?
