Hi Rob,
you you get me a sh -x output of the hal init script?
If hal has already been started (by dbus), it shouldn't fail if it's started a
second time (by the hal postinst script). So I can't reproduce your problem.
About restarting only those services that are actually running:
For that to work, all init script (which depend on dbus) would need to support
the "status" action. I doubt this is the case bug will have to verify that.
