I just had this upgrading a newly installed Lenny to Sid. Removing fdi-cache 
does not help - it is recreated with identical contents.

I did a '/etc/init.d/hal stop'. After that I found a hald still running. 
Killing that process solved the problem. Thanks, Gary.
