I just updatd from sid and spotted the following

Setting up hal (0.5.13-4) ...

And the message is correct, hal is failing, indeed, when starting wth /etc/init.d/hal start.

The likely reason is that hald is still running happily even though it was long stopped

After killing hald manually, the package was installing just happily. So, the stop
needs some help.
