Same here.

A precision that might be useful to track down this bug. The reason why
the postinst fails is that there is a hal process remaining after the
upgrade. A call to "invoke-rc.d hal stop" fails to kill this process, so
a new one won’t be able to start. A mere kill is sufficient to be able
to finish the upgrade.

Maybe the init script needs to be made more aggressive in case a hal
process not referenced in the pidfile is still running.
