If at all, then this should be a bug in network-manager-gnome.
You say network-manager applet is gone: does that mean that simply the icon in
the systray is gone after the panel has reloaded or does the nm-applet process
crash.
Could you send me the output of ps aux | grep nm-applet before and after you
connect to the AP.
