The co-maintainer of libatasmart, already has committed a patch [1] to the
Debian git repository of libatasmart. The fix has not been released i.e.
uploaded to the archive though.
If you want to test the fix yourself, you can get the sources via
git clone git://git.debian.org/pkg-utopia/libatasmart.git
