...but the improvement is only temporary; it has since broken again.

This time there was an X login active on the console for the same 
account.  (Previously, there was not.)  I terminated that and removed 
~/.dbus.

It *still* does not work.

(...and it fails again, with the same window as described previously.)

Again, strace attached.

I still suspect the bug may be that dbus-launch is wrongly trusting the 
result of x11_get_address().
