The reason why we (Martin Pitt and myself) chose to make ntfs-3g is, that most
of the external USB hard drives come with NTFS preformatted these days, and
users expect that to work out of the box, expecially the less experienced users.
xfs on the other hand is only used by experts which will have no trouble
installing xfsprogs manually.
Tagging this bug as wontfix, as we don't plan to demote ntfs-3g to suggests.
