Yes, applications can subscribe to consolekit events, but mixer_applet2
does not. And it will probably never do that.

The mixer_applet2 applet is still here for people who don’t want to
start pulseaudio for one reason or another, but in the general case you
want to use pulseaudio instead, since it doesn’t have such problems and
handles dynamic devices correctly.
