Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.9.4.1-5
Followup-For: Bug #643028
I was trying to add information to #694695, which is now closed and archived,
but I think that bug is the same as this, and still not fixed.
The solution proposed there was to recommend gnome-keyring. I think this is not
fixed by that change, and probably this should be an important bug, as the
package is very much useless to the common user without gnome-keyring The
nm-applet is failing silently, no error message is displayed, and you have no
clue what's going on until you start it from the command line, so you can see
the cryptic error, and after searching for that you arrive to the conclusion
that you need gnome-keyring (which is also weird, as I am not using gnome, but
xfce).
This also does not explain why everything works if I right-click on
the applet, select the connection editor and add the password
manually. So, nm has a way of storing the passwords anyway.
Either gnome-keyring needs to be a Depends (although I doubt this, my
passwords are still somewhere without it), or nm-applet should do
something more sensible when it's not present.
Please note that this is affecting the just released stable. I noticed this
when I did a fresh installation of my laptop a couple of weeks ago.
