Thanks for the rapid reply. That didn't quite do the job, but putting
"exit 0" at the start of that script (I neither need nor want avahi on
my machines) solved the problem. I've now forcefully purged the
avahi-daemon package from the machine :-)
You may consider this bug report closed fixed.
