I would build directly from the upstream git repo. Start with commit
tagged 0.9.10.0 as good and 1.0.0 as bad (sounds illogical, but you'll
need to inverse good/bad for git bisect in this case).

There aren't really that many patches in the Debian package, at least
not one which should influence the behaviour for this particular issue.
