[Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#803934: /usr/bin/nm-applet: nm-applet 1 pixel wide

Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.9.10.0-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/nm-applet

This morning I found that my nm-applet was not visible. (I use
`trayer' and launch nm-applet from my session startup scripts.)

Further investigation revealed that nm-applet was in fact displayed in
trayer but was only 1 pixel wide. trayer would grow and shrink when
I stopped and started nm-applet, and with nm-applet running I was able
to see the nm-applet window in xwininfo -tree (see below).

I had just un-suspended my computer (which had been suspended last
night) in an environment where the previously-available wifi network
was not present. Normally when I do this I get the `network is
broken' icon, and can use the GUI to `connect to hidden wireless
network'.

The bug cleared up, when I ran
       nmcli c up id ' access'
(which successfully connected to the intended network, producing a
suitably reassuring message) and then tried to hover over the
1-pixel-wide subwindow.

I'm not sure whether the nmcli rune was sufficient, or whether the
attempt to hover was necessary too. (My computer is rather slow, so

there was a race.)

I _think_ that the nm-applet was not running when I typed the nmcli
rune, and that I started it shortly afterwards, but I'm not sure.

Before that, I had flailed in the following ways. None of these had
any useful effect:
  * Rebooting the machine
  * Reinstalling network-manager with apt-get --reinstall
  * Stopping and restarting nm-applet multiple times (with kill, and
    then later by running it in an xterm and using ^C to kill it)
  * Stopping and restarting network-manager (with /etc/init.d)
  * Running (in desperation) `nm-applet -geometry 50x50' and
    `nm-applet --geometry 50x50'

While nm-applet was not working, it did not print any output when
started (except the output it produces when it's killed):

zealot:~> nm-applet
^Cnm-applet-Message: PID 0 (we are 8358) sent signal 2, shutting down...

(nm-applet:8358): GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID 549 was not found when attempting to remove it
zealot:~>

But now that it is working, it produces this output:

zealot:~> nm-applet

(nm-applet:9467): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy

(nm-applet:9467): nm-applet-WARNING **: Failed to show notification: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Notifications was not provided by any .service files

[shell prompt does not return, as expected]

Now, restarting it consistently produces a working applet.

I appreciate this is probably not a very useful report. But I
couldn't find anything in the Debian BTS describing these symptoms, so
I thought it would be useful to file a bug.

I'm happy to provide copies of logs etc. if that would be helpful, or
to try some different combination of things (whether data collection,
or attempts at resolution) if the problem should recur.

Thanks,
Ian.
