I've encountered this issue too when connecting a Nokia C5 via USB to my
laptop to share its internet connection, nm-applet crashes every time I
unplug and then re-plug the phone. I tried the patch suggested by Morten
and I can confirm it solves the issue.

Digging into the upstream changes I've found that this was actually
fixed in the version 1.0.2 with this commit:

This version also fixed another crash in applet-device-broadband.c:
