This test is new in 1.4 and was added in [1] to uncover "toolchain
issues". The commit mentions that building without garbage collection
(--disable-ld-gc) should fix the issue. I tried that on a porter machine
(ppc, partch.debian.org), but it didn't make a difference.

Added Lubomir to CC, who added that check upstream. Maybe he has some
input on this.
