We build/run unit tests during upstream CI in pbuilder, and I build the
official uploads with sbuild, both of which are chroots. It also works well on
Debian's buildds (on official arches at least, there are some quirks but they
should get specific bugs). Please give some details about which version you
built and how it fails. Does that still apply to the current sid version?
