   * What led up to the situation?
Tried to install 
 xorg hexchat k3b dolphin kdenlive gimp inkscape libreoffice 
 calibre xpdf kate conky mplayer vlc
using apt-get. It hung on:

Tried to kill dpkg since Ctrl-c wasn't working
