This might be the upgrade issue I described in #965210. If it is, the
workaround is to reboot, or to log out and back in.

#965210 is very similar to the old bug #699447 in experimental, but
with different versions and paths involved.

Log messages from your polkit agent (whatever package provides
polkit-1-auth-agent, for example GNOME Shell, polkit-kde-agent-1 or
lxpolkit) would help to confirm whether it's #965210. If it's #965210,
you'd see something like this (quoting from #699447, the message might
be a bit different in testing/unstable):

Cannot spawn helper: Failed to execute child process
"/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkit-agent-helper-1" (No such file or directory)

If you get a message similar to that during the failure to authenticate,
then this is probably a duplicate of #965210.
