# apt-get install pipewire-audio
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  pipewire-alsa
The following packages will be REMOVED:      <<<<<<======
  pulseaudio*
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  pipewire-alsa pipewire-audio
0 upgraded, 2 newly installed, 1 to remove and 4 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B/74.4 kB of archives.
After this operation, 6378 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

There certainly seems to be some conflict between them, as above.

It appears that I may have mis-characterized the problem.

Now testing with pipewire v0.3.85 — if the TV is on BEFORE the desktop session starts,
then HDMI audio works, and "pavucontrol" can be used to switch an audio stream back and forth
between analog speakers and HDMI.

However, if the TV is turned on AFTER the desktop session starts, "pavucontrol" still finds
the HDMI device, and will offer to switch the stream to it, but nothing comes out of the TV speakers.

There are new problems with pipewire v0.3.85 — the "pavucontrol" UI is extremely sluggish,
for some reason, and the amplitude indicator is either nonfunctional, or sometimes does not
appear at all.
