I filed it with Severity: minor.

I am afraid that our efforts in making adduser easier to use in
maintainer script have mainly occurred during the trixie release, so if
you want your maintainer script to also work in backports it is probably
better to keep it the way it is.
Your code can of course stay as it is, and adduser is treating its
non-silence in reaction to your call as a bug in adduser, but I will
probably be filing more bugs during the forky cycle suggesting packagers
to simplify their maintainer script codes regarding adduser.
That being said, please feel free to wontfix this and the maybe
following bug.
