This is less systemd-specific than you might think at first glance: it's 
just the inetd-inspired $LISTEN_FDS (sd_listen_fds(3)) socket activation 
protocol.

The --systemd-activation option *is* systemd-specific, though, and 
that's unlikely to change: the fact that it's closely related to systemd 
services (system services on the system bus, user services on the 
session bus) is rather the point.
