Package: network-manager
Version: 0.6.4-7
Severity: normal

On my up-to-date Debian Lenny system (using Gnome), NetworkManager cannot switch to a WPA-enabled wireless network from another network. When I switch to a WPA-enabled wireless network, it brings down the wireless interface (i.e., so that it does not show up in the results of "ifconfig"), yet it appears to do everything else as normal. Throughout its attempt to join the new network, it never brings the interface back up. As a result, it fails to join the network. Further, if all of the other available networks are WPA-enabled, then it will similarly fail when it tries to fall back to each of them, and thus it eventually reports no connectivity.

Switching to unencrypted networks works as expected. Also, joining a WPA-enabled network on boot works as expected, as does switching to an unencrypted one from a WPA-enabled one. Only switching to a WPA-enabled network fails (either from an unencrypted one or another WPA-enabled one).

Interestingly, if all my networks are WPA-enabled and I select the network that I wanted again after NetworkManager has given up on all of them, then NetworkManager re-enables the interface and successfully connects.

As a work-around, I have found that manually re-enabling the interface with "sudo ifconfig ethX up" during the process will result in NetworkManager making a successful connection shortly after.

I have tested an up-to-date Ubuntu 7.04 installation (network-manager version 0.6.4-6ubuntu7) on the same computer and there is no problem.

My wireless card is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. Info on the rest of my system is at the end of this report.

Now onto the command output and log files. :)

I have three wireless networks: OpenWrt2, OpenWrt, and trendnet. The first two are Linksys WRT54GL routers running the OpenWrt Linux distribution. The third is an unmodified retail router from Trendnet. They all behave the same. For this test, all three have WPA enabled and I am attempting to switch from OpenWrt2 to OpenWrt.

Observe the outputs of the following commands prior to switching. Note that my wireless interface is eth2, and to save space I have removed the output for the other interfaces.

tristan@tinygod3:~$ ifconfig ; iwconfig

I then select the "OpenWrt" network in NetworkManager. It immediately de-configures the interface, dissociates from OpenWrt2, begins associating to OpenWrt, and brings down the interface.

Observe. The following four commands were run immediately in rapid succession after selecting the new network:
As you can see, the ifconfig output for eth2 is gone, because it is down.

NetworkManager goes and works for quite a while, but the interface never comes up in ifconfig and the NetworkManager icon never reports that it has finished.

Observe. The following command was run perhaps a minute later and shows no change:

tristan@tinygod3:~$ ifconfig ; iwconfig
eth2 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"OpenWrt"

If left alone, eventually NetworkManager will give up and try to return to the OpenWrt2 wireless network, but it _still_ won't bring up the interface so again it's unable to connect. Eventually it gives up on every network and reports no connectivity.

However, if I manually bring up the wireless interface again at any point in the process, then NetworkManager shortly after will succeed in connecting and everything will work. Observe:

tristan@tinygod3:~$ sudo ifconfig eth2 up

Then, shortly after:
