IMHO its not a good idea to put such improvements as patches to the 
debian package. We have far too much patches already in the vdr 
packages. If the author isn't interested in further development, you 
probably should start a fork of vdradmin under a new name. As vdradmin 
is GPL licenced, this shouldn't be a problem. I personally would prefer 
a completely new web administration interface in php, ruby or python :)
