Let me summarize this - we have two alternatives:

1) Let the user handle this issue manually and maybe give her some hints
via debconf.
2) Do it automatically, but require the user to use a specials script,
if she requires to assign vdr manually to a group

The second approach may cause some confusion, if the user isn't aware of
the fact, that she should use a special script instead or in addition to
adduser (this should be mentioned not only in README.Debian, but in NEWS
too). On the other side this approach makes installing / uninstalling of
plugins easier.

The first approach requires slightly more "mental work" from the user,
so I would second your suggestion.
