Hi,

This is regarding bug #219386, 'shell' option is empty. I hit this now,
and here is what I get:

---<output>---
amar at cribobaa:/tmp$ vi file.tmp
Error detected while processing /usr/share/vim/vimrc:
line 58:
E91: 'shell' option is empty
E484: Can't open file /tmp/v986310/0
Hit ENTER or type command to continue
---</output>---

vim version: 6.3
Debian release: sarge 3.1r1 (stable)

I could see that this bug has lot of discussion happened (not all I
could understand). The real reason for this bug seems to be with the
shell not being set in /etc/passwd (the shell column is empty)
amar:x:1000:100::/home/amar:

Now when I do a `usermod -s /bin/bash amar', and then fire vi, things
are fine. I missed out on configuring the shell for the user (don't
remember if there was an option to configure the shell), hence this
issue.

Just FYI...as this might crop up again, with those who don't have the
shell configured.

Best,
Amarendra

P.S.: I am address this to Bam too, as I am not sure if this shall go
to pkg-vim-maintainers, and I found Bam's email on the bug report.
Thanks!
