You can also use Ctrl-[ in general as a replacement for escape if that's
more convenient.

That's most likely a bug which I've already suggested Bram fix.

If the above bug does get fixed, mapping <C-c> as <Esc> in insert mode
may be a viable alternative (if <C-[> doesn't work well for you).
