Thanks for digging into this and providing a thorough explanation of
what's happening.  The Conflicts had fixed the scenario that Noah
provided (from what I could tell) but the whole diversion process is a
bit of a mess since it isn't handled automatically by dpkg.

I'll look at this further after the holidays.
