My opinion:
running a "fakeroot make -f debian/rules clean" on a unchanged debian source
should result in getting the same as unpacking the source with "dpkg-source=
 -x
package.dsc"

Debian Policy says in 4.8:

clean
    This must undo any effects that the build and binary targets may have h=
ad,
    except that it should leave alone any output files created in the parent
    directory by a run of a binary target.


So please fix that.
