It's no longer relevant at that point in time. Moreover, a
Conflict/updated Depends would have been nice too, to avoid potential
troubles.

That's what you get when too many people are working on the same
packages: nobody feels responsible for them anymore, all kinds of
changes happen without any real coordination, etc.
