If you're going to keep in charge of some packages in a team, you
shoud definitively know about debhelper. It is not that CDBS is not
valid, but you will find some problems in CDBS that you won't be able to
track if you don't know how to "manually" or using debhelper build a
package.
I strongly encourage you to read New Maintainer's Guide[1] and perhaps
Policy.
