There was once upon a time a package called "wanpipe" in woody.

Could you take a look at it and see if it helps a bit? Or would it be
better just to start afresh?

"autotooling" won't really help here. zaptel-source installs the source
in /usr/src/zaptel.tar.bz2 .

Is this for building the kernel module or the userspace?
For userspace, zaptel.h alone should suffice.
For the kernel, you would need zaptel.h and anything that could
potentially be #include-d in it (recursively). That would be some 5 to
10 files of that directory. Mostly echo canceller implementations.
However, what I'm not sure about is whether or not you'll need the
sources / objects. At least zaptel.c .

A patch to the zaptel source is a paroblem. You can't have a patched and
a non-patched version.

If the patch is small enough, it should be applied to the original
package.
