 Humm... I'm just trying to be a good maintainer too...   :-D

 I want to stabilize the entire asterisk debian package for production
use of asterisk-1.2.9.1.

 And about get-orig-source:

$ mkdir asterisk; cd asterisk; apt-get source asterisk
$ cd asterisk-1.2.9.1.dfsg
$ make -f debian/rules get-orig-source
Downloading asterisk_1.2.9.1.dfsg-1.sid.1979.orig.tar.gz from
http://ftp2.digium.com/pub/asterisk/releases/asterisk-1.2.9.1.dfsg-1.sid.1979.tar.gz ...
http://ftp2.digium.com/pub/asterisk/releases/asterisk-1.2.9.1.dfsg-1.sid.1979.tar.gz:
14:59:26 ERROR 404: Not Found.
make: *** [get-orig-source] Error 1

....

So I found the UPVERSION in debian/rules needs to be changed, but I just
change the release in first line of debian/changelog from
"1:1.2.9.1.dfsg-1.sid.1979" to "1:1.2.9.1.dfsg-3" and "get-orig-source"
works again...

 Now I will continue with next steps that you suggest.
