I think I got things working on AMD64 by adding this kernel flag This needs 
verification as I didn't go back and break it again. I found the fix at:

"The only thing you'll need to do with regards to compilation is to 
add: -mcmodel=kernel to the first KFLAGS definition in the Zaptel Makefile.
