This has already been "fixed" upstream:

This has no bashism in it. Sadly it goes into inventing a somewhat
creative bourne shell syntax of its own. And even when that is removed,
it still does some dodgy redirection. 'nuff said.
The "fixed" version is included in zaptel 1.4.11, that has already been
uploaded. I'll fix this upstream and in Debian shortly.
