Hmm... those changes to the init script of Asterisk make sense.
In recent 1.4 versions Asterisk does not change directory to / when 
daemonizing. 

This CORE_PATTERN is an ugly hack, because it is global: it affects all
processes. So maybe just drop it? (after Lenny, that is).
