Agreed upstream in this case are one of the better ones as far as soname management goes. Experimental is also the way to go while we await lenny :-)

Btw, does the use of symbols help packaging in this case? Ie what are the specific advantages, does it only help rdepends?

I have been toying with symbols for commoncpp but couldn't see any immediate benefits.
