None of my asterisk processes (on various boxes) has access to audio hardware.
Not even on my laptop.

On the laptop does run an user in the audio group a "soft phone".

If I understand the original poster correct, that he wants
to use "asterisk console"

My advice is to change in /etc/asterisk/asterisk.conf the line:
;rungroup = asterisk ; The group to run as.
into
rungroup = audio ; The group to run as.
