Situations would be e.g. Hylafax on a machine different from the
asterisk server.

For me, I consider it useful, as it provides an faxmodem
interface. (I use efax instead on hylafax on the top of it).
app_rxfax and app_txfax are asterisk specific. Porting the
infrastructure around it from a faxmodem interface would be much
more effort, and an how-to-change from Hylafax would be
appreciated.
From the docs I read it that app_rxfax at least at some point did
not provide the same functionality with fax metadata (e.g. fax
inband callerid extraction) that iaxmodem does.

I know that fax is dying out, but I find still inf them useful,
and as long iaxmodem is trivial to support it would be great to
keep it.
