I found the email from John sensible, even without an explicit question:
Upstream author is brought to the attention of some downstream issues
with their project (or a predecessor or related in other ways, not
exactly sure) and is kind enough to reach back to us in our comfort zone
of this mailinglist (instead of keeping the conversation at their
comfortzone of their issue tracker).
Reference to prior conversation was properly included. There is no
explicit question, but the implicit question I see is if we in Debian
have any question for him as upstream.
Kind regards, and happy grgorian new year,
- Jonas
