I don't see how Debian is helped by your packaging from scratch - but
obviously it can help *help* gain more knowledge on the codebase and
experience with tooling involved in packaging.

What is most urgently needed is someone looking at CVEs and other severe
bugs reported against Asterisk versions now in Debian unstable and
oldstable (and in a bright future also in testing and stable).

I am pretty fluent in packaging new upstream releases of Asterisk, but
do not have time for inspecting, fixing and testing bugs.

Not sure what you mean here.  The mailinglist used for Debian packaging
is pkg-voip-maintainers at lists.alioth.debian.org - as listed here:
